Young people ‘pessimistic about career development goals’

Almost three-quarters of young people do not believe they will achieve their work ambitions, new research has found.

Six in ten respondents were of the opinion that it would be more difficult to get a job on leaving school in the next six months compared to now, according to findings from the Barclay’s Youth Barometer.

Despite this, many do have career development goals, with one-quarter of young people saying they would like to start their own business.

What’s more, 11 per cent of those surveyed believe that businesses should help young people to realise their ambitions by providing more work experience.

Ashok Vaswani, chief executive, Barclays Retail and Business Banking said: “The Barclays Youth Barometer offers a unique insight into the level of ambition our young people have.

“The challenge faced by business, government and education providers is to ensure this ambition can be realised by creating the opportunities they need when they start their careers.”

One response to “Young people ‘pessimistic about career development goals’

  1. It would be interesting to find out more about the sample size used by the Barclays Youth Barometer. My own view is that young people need to be more realistic about the current economic outlook, whilst obtaining skills that make them more attractive.

Software engineering is an area that young graduates should strongly consider, with the 21st century economic infrastructure being forged in the digital realm.
